One Final Push

November 3, 2008

With less than 48 hours till we 'hopefully, supposedly' find out who our next Commander in Chief is, I liken this year's presidential campaign to a pregnancy. A hard, difficult one that is nearing it's bittersweet end. The water has broken, my friends - and I am a little nervous.

Will people really vote in an African-American for President? I mean, for all intents and purposes that is what it will boil down to. And why don't I feel that way about making history and voting in a woman as vice-president. That is because we don't vote for 'vice' presidents in this country. We vote for Presidents.

Will race be the determining factor? Shouldn't the economy be more of an issue? Another thing that bothered me personally was the fact that, for me, McCain's age came into question. After all, we would make history as a nation by voting him in as well. It bothered me because I don't discriminate, but when he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate it sealed the deal for me to throw all of my support to Obama/Biden.

Some people also feel that Obama is almost too good to be true. All this talk of hope and unity, is it too much to stomach in this cynical land of ours? They say he is a tidy, neat little package just like his infomercial that aired on the major networks last week. That led a colleague of mine to ponder: Is it all just a package? I had to concur, as he and I had already cast our respective votes for Obama/Biden.

Isn't Sarah Palin a tidy, neat little package? No one fits the bill more than her. Just like a first time mother's carefully packed suitcase ready to go to the hospital when in labor; packed almost perfectly, absolute, rehearsed and ready to cart out on cue. I looked at both packages and I just didn't buy hers. When McCain selected her, that is when his age came into question for me because I found it to be a poor case in judgment.

McCain has Palin and Joe the Plumber, and quite frankly that just isn't enough at the end of the day. Obama's message of hope and unity was just what I needed to hear. Sure, he will have to prove himself - especially if he wants a second term. I just hope, we as a nation give him the chance.

The Little Things

The upcoming Presidential election has become quite the water-cooler convo, as the day approaches in two weeks. My friend and I had a really cool discussion about the little things that people may or may not talk about regarding it.

For example, if Barack had a pregnant 17 yr old he'd be blasted to shame and it's funny how Palin's in that situation, yet aside from the first week she was in the campaign not too much has been brought up about it. It's like it's cute that her daughter is prego. In addition to this, Palin is anti-abortion even for rape victims.

McCain a.k.a. the Crypt Keeper – Isn’t it strange that McCain's medical history seemed to come up all the time while in the Senate? Never before had I ever considered age in an election. Normally, I wouldn’t even call it into question, because that would be discriminatory and all. However, seeing as he looks like he may keel over and die any given moment and his running mate hasn’t proven she even deserves to be invited to the party, let alone it’s guest of honor – it IS very important to consider. Note: Since most Republicans agenda calls for insulting our common intelligence, if McCain wins the election we'll be stuck with the village idiot who kills animals for sport from helicopters in a state that’s known for its wildlife and natural beauty.

Is Joe the Plumber the best thing McCain has for his campaign?

By the way, in case you were wondering, Obama is NOT a terrorist. He is a humble man who knows what it’s like to work hard. He can talk to men posted on the corner stoop in the hood and do a profound speech for a crowd of scholars in an ivy league university. That's what America needs: a worldly, multifaceted, multicultural person who isn’t afraid to push for change, make change, admit THEIR OWN mistakes flawlessly!

Let’s speak plainly, because it’s on all our minds. If you say race or sex don’t matter in this election, you are lying to yourself. It matters to a lot of people. I actually have known people in my life, who would vote McCain/Palin for the simple fact that they are white and Obama is not. Americans need to stop looking at the color of someone’s skin and realize what the better choice is for the countr. McCain and Palin will not aid our current situation; they will WORSEN it. Do we really need more reason to think the world is coming to an end?
